Fifty years ago, towering visionary Arthur Mitchell directed his considerable passion and energy—as well as his life savings—into an extraordinary idea, the establishment of a ballet school and professional company in his home community of Harlem. Many people thought he was crazy, but he was not the kind of person to be stopped from doing something he believed in. Along with master teacher Karel Shook he co-founded Dance Theatre of Harlem to transform the lives of the children of his childhood neighborhood through training in classical ballet, and to create a professional company to prove that, given opportunity and access, African Americans could not only do ballet but excel at it.
Your support is very important to us. Please contribute today and help us to honor Arthur Mitchell and thank him for his vision; passion; and tenacity, and for never letting anyone tell him that he could not achieve his dream.
